The Middle School Jam: Creating Uncommon Combos

At Washington Middle School (Seattle, Washington) we are approaching improvisation early and often with our jazz band and fiddler students in an effort to develop an authentic experience in American Roots Music.

Kelly Barr-Clingan & Mike Lewis


Kelly Barr Clingan, Director of Concert Bands and Jazz, has been teaching at her alma mater, Washington Middle School, since 2008. A graduate of Roosevelt High School and the University of Washington, she is rooted in Seattle's celebrated tradition of music education.

 

 

Mike Lewis is a trumpet player from New York, who has recently moved back to Hawaii from the Pacific Northwest. He is fluent in jazz trumpet, lead trumpet, and recording projects, and his resume includes touring and recording with many esteemed artists, including Wynton Marsalis, Sonny and Cher, Billy Joel, The Temptations, Tony Bennett, and Bruno Mars. His teaching highlights include Jazz in the Schools Hawaii, Christ Church Polytech Jazz School, Friends Academy New York, and Washington Middle School Seattle.

HMEA Mission Statement
